Maze of Whispers: The Art of Mari Zand
Maze of Whispers: The Art of Mari Zand
We are excited to unveil Maze of Whispers, the debut monograph from Iranian-born artist Mari Zand (aka MadMaraca).
Mari Zand, best known by her online handle MadMaraca, is a world-builder who uses voxels – volumetric pixels – to sculpt impossibly detailed digital dioramas. Zand’s work often takes the form of dense chunks of ancient city, the textures precise but the scale blown out to the realm of myth, of fable.
Here you will find house built upon temple built upon dome built upon palace. The streets are often just a gigantic form of stairway, and in amongst the impacted, almost calcified muddle of it all, the mind cannot help but imagine ancient places with their own traditions. Squint and you can picture bazaars where perfumes and driftwood and old books are sold day and night, and where the central coffee shop never closes, a welcome meeting place for travelers that spans easy millennia.
“I really like to build worlds, and I want to invite people into them, to explore.” - Mari Zand
